A glass roof for the Silesian Library – a century of heritage in a modern setting

Is it possible to imagine a place that combines history, architecture, and modernity all in one? Such a place is the Silesian Library in Katowice, which is now over 100 years old, yet it owes its contemporary appearance to late 20th-century architecture. Inside, it houses more than 2.6 million volumes – which, thanks to the recently replaced glass roof over the main entrance, are now bathed in new light. This unique feature was manufactured by WIŚNIOWSKI.

An architectural gem of Katowice

The Silesian Library is not just a space for books – it is the heart of Plac Rady Europy (Council of Europe Square) and an architectural landmark of Katowice. Its monumental form, designed by a trio of architects: Marek Gierlotka, Jurand Jarecki, and Stanisław Kwaśniewicz, stands out against the cityscape. The designers succeeded in creating a space that is not only functional, but also inspiring. It is a building that draws the eye and encourages visitors to explore its interior.

A modern solution for demanding projects

The glass roof uses the ALUPROF MB-SR50N system. It is an innovative mullion and transom wall system, ideal for modern buildings that demand not only great aesthetics, but also outstanding technical performance.

The system’s slender lines allow for lightweight and striking glazed surfaces that give buildings a contemporary look. It is worth noting that this system makes it possible to execute even the most unconventional projects, such as arched or semi-structural façades (MB-SR50N EFEKT). The MB-SR50N also integrates easily with other Aluprof systems, such as window and door systems, facilitating the creation of a cohesive design style throughout the project.

Thanks to its excellent thermal insulation properties (Uf from 0.6 W/(m2K), the system meets the requirements of modern energy-efficient and passive buildings. Its high resistance to the weather conditions and the possibility to use additional reinforcements make this system not only attractive, but also extremely durable.

The project also uses Stopsol reflective glass, which combines high aesthetic values with practical functionality. Its popularity stems from the availability of a wide range of hardened coatings and a broad colour palette, which allows it to be tailored to a variety of architectural needs and designs. At the Silesian Library, Super Silver glass in blue was used, which pairs beautifully with the profiles in RAL 5015. Stopsol was designed with solar heat control in mind. Thanks to its low thermal transmittance, this glass helps reduce air-conditioning and heating costs, making it both an eco-friendly and economical solution.
